Tribology research in China: a personal view

Abstract With the development of the economy and manufacturing industry, tribology research in China has experienced a fast growth over recent decades. This review gives an outline for the research progresses achieved by Chinese scientists and engineers in various subjects, including elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) and mixed lubrication, nano-tribology, lubricants and additives, tribo-materials and coatings, tribology issues in biology and bionics, wear of materials, and tribological design that transfers research achievements to the design process of machine components. In comparison with the vastness of research activities and Chinese economy, this article is written by the present author, based on limited information and knowledge, but it may help tribologists around the world to get a better idea about what has been done by their counterparts in China, which would encourage communication and cooperation in tribology research.
